In the original project for the New Hermitage this room was intended for copyists to work in. The walls devoid of paintings were covered with ornamental murals, traces of which were found in the course of a recent restoration. In the second half of the 19th century paintings of the Dutch and Flemish schools were installed here. This practice has continued: the present display shows the formation of these schools around the turn of the 17th century. Outstanding among the paintings are two compositions by Hendrik Goltzius - Adam and Eve and The Baptism, as well as works by Jan Breughel the Elder (Velvet Breughel), David Teniers the Younger and Theodor Rombouts.
